What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is a practical and logical practice which focuses on the use of self-hypnosis to enable an active birth. (By ‘Active birth’ we mean a birth where mum is free to birth in a natural manner, following her own instincts and the physiological logic of her body.)
Hypnobirthing is a method of preparing for birth and is made up of many small things, which all work to make a big difference. For me, hypnobirthing is the marriage of two key components:
Providing parents with an understanding of the science and logic involved in birth.
This element of the course equips parents with information about birth. We go back to basics and look at how our bodies are designed to give birth, looking at the hormones needed during labour and how our mind plays an integral role in cultivating these. We look at the importance of the mind-body connection; ‘Where the mind leads, the body follows.’
The theory behind this is the Fear, Tension, Pain Cycle, which suggests that if we are scared or fearful then our bodies enter the ‘Fight or flight’ mode, which causes adrenaline to kick in, our blood flow to redirect from our uterus to our ‘fight or flight’ organs such as our legs and our body becomes tense and we may panic. As you can imagine, this isn’t the ideal state that we want to be in during labour. The ideal scenario is that we are calm, in control and full of energy and the right hormones required to birth in the most natural way possible. In hypnobirthing we learn how to control our mind, environment, decision making process and breathing so that we remain calm and never get to the stage where we find ourselves on the fear, tension, pain cycle.
Equipping parents with the tools and confidence to have a better birth
Once you have an understanding of the science and logic behind birth and the hormones required, we then look at the various tools and techniques which will help you to cultivate these.
We focus on building your confidence as well as providing you with a bank of techniques which you can use during labour. For example, breathing and relaxation techniques, creating the right environment, exploring some of the positions you may find comfortable, birth affirmations, reprogramming any negative thoughts around birth, the integral role of your birth partner, how to remain calm in changing environments or situations.
Ultimately, hypnobirthing is a practical course which will prepare your mind and consequently your body, for birth. By understanding birth and then using self-hypnosis you can bring your body into a state of deep relaxation to enable your body and your muscles to work in the way that they are designed to during birth.
There are various misunderstandings about hypnobirthing, some people may dismiss it as a ‘fad’ or ‘hippy’ pain relief method, when really, it’s just basic science and common sense. It is a completely logical approach to birth which women have been using for hundreds of years, way before the invention of hospitals and medicine. Using hypnobirthing will allow you to go back to basics, trust your instinct, work with your body and birth your baby in a calm and confident way.
